On September 20th, we released a new authoring mode for Polyup! Read all about the new changes and features here.

The first thing you’ll notice is that there are four tabs at the top instead of 5.

This is because we’ve moved Test mode. Now, if you want to test your machine as if you were a player, you can click the “play” icon on the machine screen. Then, if you go into any of the chips, it will act as if you were a player. Use this mode to show off your machine to students in your class, or to just make sure it acts as you want it to!

We’ve also updated the way you can design the board. Instead of dragging path blocks to the screen, you can now click on any point in the grid to create a path block there (or, you can even click and drag to create a long path). As before, you can drag chips up to the grid to put them there.

We’ve also changed the way the “Goal” tab works. Before, you could put whatever you wanted in the goal tab, but now, you must create a goal based on the blocks, start state, and input that you designed your puzzle with. This is to ensure that your solution is possible! Once you run the “Goal” tab, you’ll see that the idea popup gets filled with whatever output you created.

We’ve also updated the “blocks” tab with additional functionality. Now, you can limit the number of copies of a block the user has access to, by clicking on the block in the tray and ticking the number of copies up or down! By default, every block has an infinite number of copies, so this feature is super important if you want the player of your machine to only have one or two copies they can use!

Other than that, authoring mode works as it always has! This article covered the major changes from the last version. To see a full tutorial on how to use authoring mode, see our teacher tutorial on our website here.
