As watching online courses and reading when commuting can be tricky — especially in London, where it’s difficult to find space for a book on the tube during rush hour — some of our team members chose podcasts as a way to maximise their idle time — be it commuting, at the gym or out jogging — to stay on top of their game. We created a little survey asking people which podcasts relating to UX design they listen to on a regular basis and below are the results.

UIE Brain Sparks

UIE Brain Sparks: set up by Jared Spool, one of the pioneers of modern user experience design, this podcast touches on various topics within UX such as content design, responsive web design, style guides, product design, mobile, enterprise interfaces etc. Great content often presented by some of the top industry leaders.

Our favourite episode: Jeff Gothelf — Discover What Customers Really Want with Lean UX

UX Podcast

UX Podcast: another great podcast touching on important aspects of UX. By interviewing the most influential design thinkers in the world, but also on their own, Per Axbom and James Royal-Lawson often explore difficult and controversial topics that are important, either to design or businesses.

Our favourite episode: Design doing with Don Norman

Dollars to Donuts

Dollars to Donuts: Steve Portigal is another big name in the UX industry. Podcasts are a part of his personal website, where you can also explore his work and services. Every episode is an interview with UX executives, not necessarily with just rock stars, but with tech startups and other companies too.

The Big Web Show

The Big Web Show: Jeffrey Zeldman, apart from hosting the podcast, has co-created A List Apart and An Event Apart, two big names shaping the tech industry. As with his blog and conference, the podcast is not purely focused on UX, but looks at the broader picture of web technologies, design, development and the industry as a whole.

Our favourite episode: Emotional Design with Aarron Walter

Design Details

Design Details: as a part of the Spec community resources, Design Details is a highly engaging podcast, where you can explore not just “details” of design, but zoom out and take a look into how design teams are being built or what the hottest trends in the industry are.

Our favourite episode: Sick Ajax Skills (feat. Adam Michela)

Of course there are tons of other interesting podcasts to explore, some of them more or less related to user experience design. It’s always great to listen to podcasts that are a little bit outside your area of expertise — while you may not understand everything, you will get accustomed to industry terms and discover the latest trends which you can then explore in more detail when (or if) you have more time!
