Would Your Team Hire You?

Here is a quick and dirty culture hack for team leaders that care about building a cohesive team culture, and informing that culture through data. As a manager, you are responsible for leading your team by communicating through actions what is valued and rewarded on your team. Doing this consistently can be hard because it isn’t a discrete task. It is a part of everything you do from leading meetings to 1:1s, to coffee chats. The impact of doing this well however is so big that it is well worth it to spend some time thinking about how to do it well.

Here’s Pomello’s 3-step hack to help you figure out if you are doing a good job.

  1. Step One — Measure your team culture by creating a profile on Pomello. All that’s required is that you select 5–10 team members to answer a short survey. Do not include yourself as one of the people who answer your survey.
  2. Step Two — Once the majority of team members have completed their surveys. Send yourself Pomello’s job candidate survey as if you were applying for a job on your own team. This will generate a profile showing you how well the values you prioritize fit with those of your team.
  3. Step Three — Review your team analytics and your candidate profile to discover what your team perceives as your team’s values and how well they line up with your own. Look for values where you are strongly aligned with your team and watch out for values where there is a gap in the perceived importance.

Here’s what good vs. bad results looks like:

The higher your score as a manager, the closer your values align with your team’s

A few caveats: at Pomello we love thorough research and large sample data sets. This is not that situation. As stated in the title this is a hack. It’s meant to take the temperature of your team and give you some valuable insight into how your own personal values fit in with your team. We don’t expect or promote the idea that a team culture should perfectly reflect your own values, after all you are not a despotic ruler. Instead, we like to think of this hack as a way to begin a discussion of your team culture backed by data.
