A friend of mine just asked an interesting question on Facebook. Should two popular Christmas songs, “Baby it’s Cold Outside” and “Fairytale of New York City” be banned? This friend is an English teacher, and he is having his students debate the issue. For those of you who are not familiar with the songs, let me give you a quick drive by.

Baby It’s Cold Outside

“Baby It’s Cold Outside”, is a song that was penned in 1944 Frank Loesser and appeared in the MGM movie Neptune’s Daughter in 1949. It was later recorded by Dean Martin and has been covered by everyone from Sammy Davis Jr. and Carmen McRae to Idina Menzel and Michael Buble.

Baby is a catchy, much-loved Christmas tune. But it also happens to be a misogynistic romp about a guy who is hell bent on plying a girl with drinks so he can have his way with her despite all…
