When God looks the other way
Muse’s new single “Dig Down” is rock at its best. Matt Bellamy’s gritty lyrics defy firing squads, oncoming darkness, lost love, and wait, even God turning away?
The deep organ and steady quarter note drums make you want to crank it up, and belt it out. Backup singers and orchestral strings add a gospel sound that chases each line with the repeated plea not to give up, but…
“Dig down! And find faith!” — Muse
But then one line catches you off guard:
“When God decides to look the other way…”
The problem is, that’s now how God operates. Jesus reassured his followers, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” He asks His followers to make sacrifices; give up worldly pleasures in exchange for better things, but in turn His promise is I won’t abandon you.
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”
So, next time it’s on the radio belt it out. Top of your lungs. But remember God won’t turn His back on you.
That’s worth shouting about.
Dig Down full lyrics
When hope and love has been lost
And you fall to the ground
You must find a way
When the darkness descends
And you’re told it’s the end
You must find a way
When God decides to look the other way
And a clown takes the throne
We must find a way
Face the firing squad
Against all the odds
You will find a wayDig down
Dig down
Dig down
And find faith
When you’re close to the edge
With a gun to your head
You must find a wayWhen friends are thin on the ground
And they try to divide us
We must find a way
We have entered the fray
And we will not obey
We must find a way
YeahDig down
Dig down
Dig down
And find faith
When they’ve left you for dead (dig down)
And you can only see red (dig down)
You must find a wayDig down
Dig down
Dig down
Find faith
We won’t let them divide (dig down)
We will never abide (dig down)
We will find a wayDig down
Dig down
Dig down
Faith
Dig down
Dig down
Faith
