Welcome to my brain…

HAPPY Monday my pop culture junkies. As I try to be pretty transparent here I must admit to you that TODAY, I am struggling. I had a bit of a big night and yes not my greatest move for a Sunday and I shall pay the price all day and what that means for you guys IS….I am NOT having my A game today. SO I apologize but truthfully I think this was inevitable as I do try to get myself out of tricky situations whenever possible and I have been dreading have to write a single fucking word about milk crates and the pressure just got to me. I broke. Milk crates have broken me. If you don’t know what I am referring to then A. CONGRATULATIONS you are living in a simulation and I am jealous and take me with you and B. I am sorry I am ruining your innocence. MORE on this disaster below so buckle up….BUT in the meantime, happy last week of summer! Did August seem like the absolute longest month known to man? I mean I am NOT complaining as it is a great month to last forever but WOW I mean we still have another day of it too. Proud of you August, you really stood on your own this year and I am grateful for you.

So let’s just dig in…and I am saying that literally as I sit here at 7AM with a bowl of leftover pasta (cacio e pepe to be exact) and a vat of coffee that I wish could be injected into my veins and here we go…there was a lot this past week. I am telling you RIGHT now I do not get to all of it. I don’t have the will! (I WILL BE SKIPPING OVER KANYE AND HIS WHOLE DONDA THING which headlined sex abusers and homophobes so YAY…BECAUSE AGAIN….I DO NOT HAVE THE WILL.) But welcome to my new subscribers, you are loved. And because I love you, I am telling you if you are reading this in a public place then DEF use headphones as there are lots of videos.

XOXO…

I cannot…

THIS IS AMERICA:

With it looking likely that Europe is once again going to restrict travel for US citizens, I can only say to all Europeans…I know this really has to do with the Milk Crate Challenge and your collective belief that Americans are dumb and we cannot have nice things like Europe. I HEAR YOU. So I am not going to spend a lot of time on this. This is a trend that got banned from TikTok…BANNED…like it takes a LOT to have an entire trend banned from a platform (but don’t worry, YouTube was like we got you come over to me and I will make you famous despite you having a serious spinal cord injury and a shattered meniscus…worth it!)…but I digress. This thing has gone SO crazy it already has its own Wiki page…naturally. The idea is that people stack up a bunch of milk crates into a pyramid I GUESS like one crate, then… 2 crates AND then 3 and so forth and then to a high point and then back down and people are trying to climb up and down it without falling. HENCE…the CHALLENGE. But most people fall as milk crates are NOT stable things. I mean did I use milk crates to hold my clothes and shoes and books and DVDs and everything else when I was in college? YES. Did I use it as a seating apparatus when I had people in my dorm room taking bong hits? SURE I DID. Turn that sucker over and plop a cushion on it and it DOES the trick. But that was the extent of my milk crate hijinks.

The origin is unclear though some reports seem to point to a video from 10 years ago that kickstarted it but no one really knows. But every teenager seemingly is trying this and parents are being forced to lock their kids up…ok maybe not BUT THEY SHOULD. While hospitals are already buckling under the weight of Covid…they now have to deal with kids across the country coming in with serious injuries from this trend. From broken bones to torn ligaments to huge cuts to spinal injuries. Never have I ever been happier to not leave my house at the moment. Alas…here are some of the buzziest moments to come out of this trend:

I MEAN THIS IS NUTS:

OMG REMEMBER THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE?? I mean this was 10 years ago but it is still haunting to me…

AND Speaking of heels…

Then this…

Followed by this…

And here is one horrible trend merging with another horrible trend…

SO…if you spot milk crates in your house…HIDE THEM. Lock them up. Lock your kids in their room. WE WILL GET THRU THIS.

The Parents we all deserve…

INIGO MONTOYA/SAUL BERENSON/JASON GIDEON/TEVYE OR WHOEVER HE IS TO YOU, WE HAVE MANDYTOK:

I mean look…is there anyone better than Mandy Patinkin and his wife Kathryn? I am waiting….! I think not. THEY are the viral TikTok stars we need. And this is NOT the first time I have written about their social media antics and it WILL not be the last. They have been a comfort throughout Covid. Usually filmed by their son, they have had some fun and heartwarming moments. But maybe NO more so than last week when a young woman posted a video about her father who had just passed away from cancer. She explained how Inigo Montoya was her dad’s favorite and well…ok why have me describe it when you can actually SEE it for yourselves. Here we are watching Mandy and Kathryn watch this woman’s video and look…as someone who has dead parents it was a showstopper. I CRIED FOR HOURS. But it was beautiful. And it captured pain and loss so beautiful so perfectly. Watch the WHOLE thing….grab the Kleenex:

SO now that you have sobbed…I thought I would use this as a place to show some of the best Mandy/Kathryn TikToks. This is hands down my fave like I wish this family would adopt me:

Their takes on pop culture are FLAWLESS.

The fact is Mandy and Kathryn are gifts and I am so here for it.

AND JUST A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS (AND SOME DESPICABLE ONES TOO…)

So it’s like 90 minutes later since I first wrote the intro and I am on a second bowl of pasta and another dark roast super strong coffee and I just have no more words to write really. SO your lucky day I have just gone ahead and compiled some of the other shit that happened…enjoy!

  • Washington Post food critic has been cancelled for trying to cancel INDIAN FOOD and like wtf how is Indian food not the BEST cuisine ever? I mean it was an OUTRAGE. THIS IS THE ARTICLE which is DUMB but I am sure it got a LOT of views so there’s that. TikTok responded:

And of course he had to respond:

  • THERE IS ANOTHER HORRIBLE TREND ON TIKTOK. POV (POINT OF VIEW) * VIDEOS OF FUCK BOYS GETTING ARRESTED, It’s like these pretty boys pretending to be in the midst of being arrested and thrown up against the wall all to the same sound…. Don’t get it? WELL HERE YOU GO and then some of my fave TikToks of people shutting them down.

AND THESE TAKEDOWNS:

  • Steph Curry, the amazing basketball player, was in the news last week but not for his sport. But because his parents announced they were getting divorced after more than 30 years and there seems to be a bit of drama…which I guess goes hand in hand with most divorces. BUT this Twitter thread by some guy telling Steph’s dad to get it together and make it work with his wife is the funniest thing I have ever read ever. YOU MUST READ THE WHOLE THING!
  • University of Nebraska in Lincoln has a major issue on their hands as a 17 year old female freshman was sexually assaulted by a 19 year old member of the Phi Gamma Delta frat ALSO known as FIJI. This is apparently NOT uncommon and the student body has HAD it and thousands came out to protest including girls with their dads. There is even some video of the frat boys filming it from their POV and laughing. But they are not laughing now. The frat has been shut down.

THAT’S IT. Did other things happen that went viral? YES. Nirvana baby? Check. Hotdogs kill you? Check. But I cannot write more, I need sleep. And I am going to go and watch the rest of a show that is NEW TO ME and that is “Why Women Kill” and you HAVE TO WATCH IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
