What is a pop-up?

Simply put, a Pop-up is a temporary space where you can sell merchandise or hold events. As their name implies, they don’t stay open long. Some pop-ups stay around for just a day while others can be open for weeks. The stores themselves can be just about anything you imagine! From an Etsy dream come to life to a holiday themed event. The pop-up stores are often focused on selling a specific product directly from the producer. This was the case with Kanye’s store where the merchandise for his new music bypassed the need for a retailer with a pop-up shop. Independent online stores often take advantage of the pop-up route as well. However, pop-ups can also be events like haunted houses, workshops, or fashion shows.

Why do Pop-ups…pop up?

With such a range of different types of pop-ups out there, there are a few different reasons why temporary spaces are in such high demand.

The key is that having a temporary spaces gives you maximum flexibility. Unlike their retailer counterparts, pop-up shops can go to their customers rather than wait for their customers to come to them. Online stores with a lot of demand in both New York and DC don’t have to pick just one place to set up shop. The limited nature of a pop-up falls in line well with an event that isn’t going to stay in one spot all year long. It is the perfect way to have a comfortable space to host an traveling art exhibit or workshop.

The limited nature of a pop-up also creates an urgency effect, where consumers are driven to grab your product before it disappears. With a temporary store, event, or show, consumers have a time limit to decide if they want to make a purchase. An item that won’t be available tomorrow may be more enticing that one that will be there the next day. After all, what pops up, must pop down.

Since pop-ups are temporary, they also provide great ways for online stores to test the waters out before launching into a permanent, physical store. It is also great for brands to test their product internationally! Vendors can comfortably have a trial run and get a glimpse of what they would need to prepare for opening a permanent location.
