The Future of VR Porn

Many have deemed VR porn as the “killer app” that will drive the entire virtual reality industry and push the technology to the mainstream. It is still early, and difficult to confirm, whether or not this has happened, is happening, or about to happen. But, it is safe to say that two major changes need to happen in order for VR porn to truly reach its full potential. First and foremost, the VR headset technology needs to improve. Secondly, the content needs to be more diverse in order to appeal to a wider audience.

The VR Headset Dilemma

It is no secret that VR headsets are too expensive. The recent price drops by HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Playstation VR are a step in the right direction — but they have a long way to go. Virtual reality is still very much in its infancy, and not something that the average consumer would use on the daily basis. That being said, most consumer electronics products that cost over $500 are premium items that you use on a daily basis — laptop, iPhone and HDTVs are prime examples. Given the price point, VR should be something that a consumer uses everyday but the lack of new content makes this difficult to do. More on that later.

The headsets are also fairly complicated to use for the average person. Configuring your VR headset, downloading content, and installing the frequent software and hardware updates all culminate in a lengthy process that is very time consuming. Not to mention, consumers currently need to be fairly tech savvy just to know how to do all this. In order for tech products to be adopted by the mainstream — they need to utilize “push-button” technology. Hopefully, more products like Hologram LTD’s VRotica will enter the market, making it easy to experience VR porn — as well as watch new content — simply with a push of a button.

VR headsets are also too big and clumsy. Given the nature of porn, things tend to get a little hot and steamy once the action starts. Planting your face in a headset that has no ventilation seems counter-productive, good luck watching a 25-minute video without having the lenses fog up. And if you are running on HTC Vive or Oculus Rift — the tethered cords can be cumbersome, making it difficult to dedicate your attention towards other, more productive things with your hands.

Content is King

The other issue with VR porn is there simply is not enough content to keep up with the demand. At the end of the day, content is king and killer VR porn videos will ultimately be the primary driver of adoption by the masses. At BaDoinkVR we doubled our weekly content as well as launched two new vertical sites, diversifying the VR experience. We added VRCosplayX, the first and only VR site dedicated to adult cosplay, and 18VR which leans towards intense, harder action. A handful of other companies are going in the right direction giving consumers access to content that is both creative and unique. But, there needs to be more.

This is not the case with VR porn, at least not yet. Most of the content is tailored towards white heterosexual males ages 18–25, and for good reason — they are a large majority of early adopters who have all the VR gear and are willing to pay for adult content. But in order for VR porn to appeal to the masses, it will need to appeal to everyone. This includes women, gays, Asians, blacks, browns, pinks, purples, furries, and everything else in between.

If the VR industry were a baseball game, we would be in the top of the 1st inning with two outs and one runner on base. It’s still very early, and we likely still have a long way to go before seeing the first home run. But, throughout the history of mankind, sex and porn have always been the drivers of new technologies. The VR porn industry is at the plate with an opportunity to knock one out of the park; we just need to read the pitch and make contact with the ball.
