Consistency Matters Now More Than Ever
When was an election ever not that big a deal?
As Americans near this “historic” election, can you think of any election that didn’t really matter that much? It’s a droll idea, that any instance in which people bothered to vote wouldn’t be considered “unprecedented,” yet we’re short-sighted creatures. We humans believe ourselves to be so different from our predecessors. Everyone thinks these times are the most important ever.
For the first time, though, I’m wondering if the United States’ decision about the next president really matters so much. Oh, certainly people have strong feelings about it, but what changes will you really see in your life? How many truly impactful changes will you experience?
I hope the fallout from this election isn’t just the next chapter of this country’s division; the story about how American politics are tearing us apart. But I suspect that’s the main headline. And it’s making me sad, really, how much emotion people invest in politicians these days.
In a recent email, James Altucher posted this shocking image of a map made by cartographer Philip Kearney after the 2016 election. What do you think? Will more people vote this November 3rd? Will we know who’s the president a week or month later? It’s anyone’s guess.
I suppose I’ll vote because I always have. And then I’ll press my “I voted” sticker on my dash or sweater and keep doing life, grateful for the small things.
What really matters?
How about trying to find consistency in life, a more significant, even life-changing practice than voting, IMO. Here’s that story.
I had a jump start on a truly unprecedented year… but only by a month or two. We’re all navigating this new thing called 2020. Consistency these days takes some effort. It’s easier to aimlessly drift or to climb that mountain. On the other hand, it’s both simpler and more difficult to do the same thing day in and day out… and that’s what I think I need to do now.
Here are some other Medium stories. A couple of them are found in Portals Pub.
