Free Agency — Back on the Market.
After 14 months of personal + professional growth in my career, I’m excited to announce my free agency and am actively looking for opportunities both domestic and international (sponsor me please!).
HCA
It’s been nearly 15 months since I’ve moved to Nashville to work at HCA and it was a humbling experience that pushed me in ways I wouldn’t have imagined. It was my first foray into Healthcare, and I learned a lot about the systems and practices that drive patient experience.
Working at HCA was an interesting blend between an agency, third-party vendor, startup and corporate team. The slightly chaotic, wispy exchange between each mode influenced how my role shifted from leader to researcher to foot solider to politician and back again. Not to mention, the small team size stretched my capabilities as a designer and as a comrade to a common cause: building tools to enable medical practitioners to facilitate and administer high-quality healthcare.
And we did!
We developed a rounding tool* — the first mobile app developed by HCA’s IT&S division. One of the benefits of being internally-developed by IT&S, is the integration with ADT for real-time patient lists, HCA 3/4 credentials for login, Lawson HR data (for pulling in your direct reports), and an Active Directory to select an employee(s) for recognition or coaching.
Our launch was well received and we hit many of the marks we set for ourselves from our initial discovery phase.
That being said, Orbit required operational preparation before its implemented in each division and while we created a governance committee slated to do said work, we were ultimately responsible for the deployment + support of the platform. Deploying an app enterprise wide to over 200 hospitals to service 40k nurses is no small task.
*Case Study coming soon.
The Nashville Entrepreneur Center
Outside of HCA, I joined the Nashville Entrepreneur Center (EC)in September 2016 as an advisor in Design Thinking, UX + UI Design, Service Design Methods: Customer Journeys, Personas, Business Model Canvas, and Brand Strategy.
As it stands today, I’ve met with 20+ entrepreneurs, half of which I’ve met on a recurring basis for the past several months. Aside from the humbling thought that my words carry some bit of weight, there’s an overwhelming sense of responsibility I’ve felt since volunteering my time toward this effort. We’ve been proponents of the Socratic style of engagement — I strongly agree with allowing the entrepreneurs to find the answers they seek through an introspective lens.
One of the highlights working at the EC has been the journey advising a cohort of startups in the Project Music Accelerator program. We have reached the final week of this 16 week process and it has been eye opening. I am one of the only advisors that has not worked in the music industry; I absorbed an insane amount of information in these 3 months. I’m also one of the few advisors that has not had a decade or more of startup experience.
While the landscape of companies has changed, the fundamentals of business never change — as a designer well versed in emerging technology and trends, my lens with the startups’ growth became one of the areas I leveraged to establish my value. As we approach demo day and beyond, I’m curious to see where the cohort goes. For now, I can relish in the moment, but the work for them and I has only just begun.
Thankfully, no matter where my journey takes me, I’m still able to work as an advisor for the EC and any of the Google Tech Hubs around the world.
Nashville + Beyond
Nashville is a weird place. I mean that in a good way.
I think.
There’s a charm to it that feels like home, but I know it’s still foreign to me. I had a hard time acclimating to the city but I grew to appreciate the quirky nature it has. I met some amazing people, and threw some cool events like an impromptu art show.
But what does this mean?
Well for starters, I’ve got a few initiatives in the works in the city that will continue to be served whether I’m physically present or not. I’d imagine reduced time in the city, but the same intensity with EC mentorship, and work with fog.haus, a consultancy with my partners Alex and Nick within the social entrepreneurship + experimental project space. We’ve got some interesting work cooking up that we can’t wait to share in the coming months, for now, you can check out some of the content we’re written about on our Visible Future Journal:
So…are you leaving Nashville or what?
I’m open to leaving or staying. If I leave, I’m really interested in working in the following cities domestically:
New York • Los Angeles • Seattle • Miami
& the following cities internationally:
Barcelona • London • Tokyo • Singapore • Amsterdam • Berlin
If I stay, the best option for me is pursuing an opportunity that is remote. That’s definitely because I could still travel to any of the places above, but I’m not locked to any particular area due to an office…unless said company had multiple offices in multiple cities.
The Wants
- I’m looking for senior to lead roles in the design capacity.
- I’m comfortable with startups, ad agencies and product studio houses
- I’m interested in the fashion, home automation, journalism/media, urban planning industries.
- I would like to introduce and or leverage Interactive Web + Mobile, AR & VR environments and Multi-Sensory experiences to any of the above industries.
- Remote if possible. If not fully remote, very flex hours and time benefits. If I have to be in the office and you have multiple offices, don’t be surprised when I decide to work in them all for 3 months at a time.
The Work
The biggest thing anyone wants to see is work. So here’s the deal. A great deal of my work is digital. Whether it be mobile apps, websites or things for your tv or watch, I’ve gone through the circuit and back again. You can view that work here:

Then there are things that sort of blur the lines a bit. That’s the stuff that’s interesting. The projects I wish I did more of. You can see my experiments here:

I’m still trying to figure out where I fit. It’s pretty tricky. I’ve got other samples of work at http://www.ameersart.com/sketchbook/ but they are old. I’ve even got collaborative work doing physical environments like SCAD Pad: http://www.scadpad.com/follow-along
All in all. I just want to be apart of something exploratory. If that means a residency at New Inc (of New Museum), or a fellowship, a PhD program, a startup or big company with a foundation in research, and the creation of new knowledge — sign me. the f*k. up.
So that’s it!
