“And the award goes to …”

For decades, Americans await Hollywood’s biggest acting awards gala — not just to find out who wins the coveted gold statue in each category, but also to see the glitterati walk the red carpet in all their finery. One tradition that has endured since the early 2000s has been the famed “gift bag” given to the award nominees in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress/Actor categories, as well as to the host. The bag, given by entertainment marketing company Distinctive Assets, receives a lot of buzz all its own for both its lavishness (the 2020 bag was valued at $225,000) as well as its diversity, typically including items from skincare products to luxury trips and healthcare services.

Setting a new precedent this year, the nominee gift bag will include the hottest trend in art: non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The tokens will be accessible to the gift recipients with a little help from Portis, now the official wallet of the “Everyone Wins” Nominee Gift Bags being given to Oscar® nominees. These gift bags are provided independently by Distinctive Assets, which has no official relationship with the Oscars® themselves.

With the growing popularity of NFTs, it makes sense that the nominees will receive these scarce and coveted gifts alongside a plethora of other diverse tributes. Portis is working together with NFT marketplace Rarible to ensure the recipients have an easy, friction-free experience receiving their NFTs. Portis is known for providing an NFT-first experience, with simple username and password access, superior display, integration with top NFT marketplaces, and one-click NFT purchase capabilities.

What will the nominees receive?

Each nominee in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress/Actor categories is being given access to select three NFTs from three separate artists’ collections. The category winners will each receive an additional NFT that is one of a kind, gifted only to them. The artists’ collections will also be auctioned on the night of the Oscars in the Chadwick Boseman Tribute NFT Auction, being held in partnership by AdVenture Media, Metaversal, and Rarible, benefitting the Colon Cancer Foundation. The auction is being held in honor of actor Chadwick Boseman, former Best Actor nominee, who died tragically less than a year ago from colon cancer. Artist Andre OShea has been commissioned to create a rare, special-edition, commemorative NFT, which the nominees will also receive.
