There’s no denying the housing crisis affecting our city. The number of unhoused individuals in Portland has been on the rise, leading to an increase in visible encampments and sparking complex discussions on how best to support these community members. The question arises: How can we create a solution that respects the dignity of every Portlander, unhoused or otherwise, while addressing the challenges that come with increasing homelessness?

Enter the Home Share Program — a vision for a compassionate and effective way to alleviate the housing crisis in our city. Rather than relying solely on traditional approaches like shelters and subsidized housing, the Home Share Program explores the potential of unused spaces within our very own homes.

The concept is simple but potentially transformative: Portland residents with spare rooms could host an unhoused individual, creating a more integrated community while reducing the visibility of encampments. In return, hosts would receive a stipend as compensation for their hospitality and contribution to this crucial cause.

But it’s not just about housing. This program aims to foster connections, break down barriers, and create a sense of belonging for everyone involved. By sharing our homes, we’re not just providing shelter — we’re offering a chance for people to rebuild their lives with the stability and support that a home environment can provide.

This initiative would be carefully managed, with thorough screening and matching processes for both hosts and guests to ensure safety and compatibility. We envision a support system surrounding the program, with case management and resources available to both parties.

We believe the Home Share Program could be a game-changer for Portland. It’s a vision that requires community buy-in, adaptability, and a willingness to see beyond conventional solutions. But with these qualities, we have the opportunity to reshape our approach to housing stability and transform our city for the better.

We invite you to join us in exploring this idea further. What are your thoughts on the Home Share Program? How can we refine this concept to best meet the needs of our community? We look forward to hearing your insights as we continue this important conversation.
