Often, you’ll be at the train station or bus stop and you’ll see a green and white sticker with a phone number on it. Many wouldn’t bother to take a second glance, but if you were to dial that number, you would be connected to one of 209 Samaritan branches across the UK, with one of over 20,000 volunteers poised and ready to answer the phone.

These volunteers at the end of each phone line have devoted their time to listening and offering emotional support to anyone who seeks it. Their selflessness provides opportunity for those who feel isolated and alone to contact someone who cares, no matter where you are or what time of the day it is.

Paul Tame, 53, is one of these unsung heroes on the front line fighting to reduce the amount of deaths by suicide and eradicate the feeling of despair from people’s lives.
