Purpose

To inspire, catalyze, educate, explore, and provide valuable content on emerging market trends that are positively impacting both people and planet.

Welcome to Good Markets

Welcome to the inaugural issue of this biweekly newsletter, with meanderings on the world of impact and venture capital, including startup highlights across the US, and an occasional perspective scattered about.

Let me further lead us with a quote, from a famous Monetary Economist who gave us an idea on the power of markets — of which we’ll promote here in admiration and respect. And don’t worry, this newsletter will be kept 100% independent and politics free, as we continue to explore the voluntary exchange of ideas and value.

“The great virtue of a free market system is that it does not care what color people are; it does not care what their religion is; it only cares whether they can produce something you want to buy. It is the most effective system we have discovered to enable people who hate one another to deal with one another and help one another.” Milton Friedman, Economist

Some Definitions:

What is a market or an impact vertical or impact? I really don’t know, nor am I here to argue semantics; I’m here to explore along with each reader willing to take the journey of discovery together. And I hope you’ll keep an open mind as we discuss sensitive topics on how venture and impact intersect at the starting line of the future.

VC Impact, will be limited here primarily to traditional equity VC private markets, highlighting narrow verticals I see as less aligned with obvious and non-obvious vice categories both. In 2020 I privately researched over 15k US startups, that aligned strongly with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — finding over 200 unicorns, M&A, or post Series A close Venture Scale businesses who raised over $20B over the last 10 years.

VC Impact Landscape. There’s a gap in the impact arena… | by Zecca J. Lehn | Medium | Medium

What is Venture Capital’s role in positively impacting the world? Can VC be used as a tool to create a Sustainable future, while not sacrificing outstanding returns that venture capital demands? Can…

The aim is to keep these articles punchy, highly informational, jargon free, and to avoid what is commonly euphemized as Green Washing, to the highest degree. Will try to stick to facts, as much as possible and encourage strong opinions loosely held — which means lots of data, figures, sources, and entertaining rabbit-holes.

We would love to hear from you, and get your feedback — this is an experiment, and hopefully I can make some great friends along the way, as we discover together how to make more positive impacts at scale. Shoot me a DM on Twitter via @Zecca_Lehn, or feel free to drop a note in the comments as this progresses.
