Bolsa Reusable Prodcue Bags

Here in Australia, the major supermarkets no longer provide free single-use plastic bags to shoppers. Customers now need to bring their own reusable green bags or buy reusable plastic bags at checkout.

This is a great first step that will help reduce the amount of single-use plastic that ends up in landfill or — worse — in our oceans, rivers, and bushland.

However, it is only a first step.

Single-Use Plastic Produce Bags

If you buy a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables at the supermarket, you need a way to collect them in-store and then transport them through checkout and back home. To facilitate this requirement, stores generally provide rolls of small plastic bags in the fresh fruit and veg section.

But, alas, these single-use plastic bags are pretty horrible from an environmental perspective. They cannot be recycled and most of them end up in our rubbish bins soon after the food they contain has been unpacked or eaten. Give it a bit of thought and you’ll quickly realize that, every day, vast numbers of these little bags are briefly used and then thrown out.
