Ragusa, a hilltop town in the southeast of Sicily, is a stunning UNESCO world heritage site filled with magnificent baroque monuments.

Meandering through the streets of Ragusa, you can feast your eyes on the sumptuously decorated Baroque churches and palaces that fill the historic center. Ragusa is a late Baroque jewel thanks to a comprehensive rebuilding project in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 1693, an earthquake hit Sicily. Like many towns, Ragusa was devastated. Following the disaster, the inhabitants chose to rebuild the old town. The rebuilding happened piecemeal over time, meaning the warren of the medieval street pattern was preserved.

Tucked into one of the historic winding streets is Locanda Don Serafina, a four-star hotel. Located inside a 19th-century palazzo, the hotel gives guests an insider experience of life in historic Ragusa. Of their 11 rooms, the most special are carved straight into the heart of the hillside.

The bedrooms and their bathrooms are located inside grottos with exposed rock walls. The luxury suite, for example, is inside the carved rock with private parking and a roof garden with a jacuzzi. Experience Junior suite also has rock walls in the bathroom and a bath dug into a niche in the rock walls.
