Postcast Cast — illustrator
Stang (Weert, 1966) is een man van weinig woorden, maar van visuele daden. Logisch ook, want hij woont en werkt vanuit Rotterdam, al ruim 30 jaar, waar hij in 1990 afstudeerde aan de Willem de Kooning Academie en later ook les heeft gegeven. Hij is van huis uit illustrator en grafisch ontwerper en werkt in opdracht, of niet. Of ‘grafisch illustrator’ zoals zijn LinkedIn zegt. Als hij wel in opdracht werkt, dan zijn dat vaak allerlei kleine en grote culturele instellingen en commerciële bedrijven in binnen- en buitenland.
Al die beschrijvingen kloppen wel, maar niet omdat er een hart in zit. En dat zit wél in zijn werk. Stang zijn optimistische speelse eigen-eigenwijze werk verrast telkens, soms hemzelf ook en die verrassing zie je dan ook duidelijk terug in zijn vondsten. Kenmerkend aan zijn werk is dat het altijd fris, vrolijk, grappig, helder, duidelijk, fantasierijk en onbelemmerd creatief is, ongehinderd en onbegrensd door begrenzingen van materiaal, medium of fantasie tovert hij telkens een lach op je gezicht, omdat het altijd precies is wat je niet verwacht. Van animatie tot lasercutter, van plasmasnijder tot klei, van mixed media tot augmented reality; hij gaat niets uit de weg om zijn Stangiaanse universum vorm te geven.
Hij werkt o.a. voor de Kunsthal in Rotterdam, Intershop, WeMakeTheCity festival, Museum het Valkhof, Boekhandel Donner, Museum Villa Mondriaan en zo veel anderen. Maakte recent ook een waanzinnig 64 meter lang geïllustreerd kunstzinnig hekwerk voor Centre Céramique rondom een mezzanine met de geschiedenis van Maastricht, van de Romeinen tot eigen verzinsels, rare vogels en snuiters en nog veel meer. 44 panelen, lasergesneden in wit gepoedercoat Stang. Eh, staal.
Stang is Postcast Cast van de allereerste minuut. Samen sparden we over de vormgeving voor Postcast, hoe we het zo simpel mogelijk konden maken. We vroegen hem de cover te illustreren van de Postcast van Lucas Mol. Die editie moet nog verschijnen.
Stang (Weert, 1966) is a man who lets his visual actions speak louder than words. Makes sense because he has lived and worked from Rotterdam for over 30 years, where he graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in 1990. ‘No words, but deeds’ is the motto of the city. He is educated as an illustrator and graphic designer and works on commission, or as a ‘graphic illustrator,’ as his LinkedIn says. His clients range from small and large cultural institutions to commercial companies, both in the Netherlands as well as abroad.
All those descriptions of him are correct, but they do not justify him enough. Stang’s optimistic, playful and quirky work always surprises, sometimes even himself, and that surprise is reflected in his creative finds. The characteristic of his work is that it is always fresh, cheerful, funny, clear, imaginative, and unimpededly creative, unrestrained by any medium. Unhindered by limitations or fantasy, he always puts a smile on your face because it is always exactly what you do not expect. From video animation to laser cutter, from plasma cutter to clay, from mixed-media to augmented reality, anything goes to shape his Stanginian universe.
He works for the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, Intershop, WeMakeTheCity festival, Museum het Valkhof, Boekhandel Donner, Museum Villa Mondriaan and many others. He recently completed an amazing 64 meters long illustrated artistic fencing for Center Céramique around a mezzanine depicting the history of Maastricht, from the Romans to his own brainventions, weird birds and guys, and much more. Forty-four panels, laser cut in white powder coated Stang. Uh, steel.
Stang is Postcast Cast from the very beginning. Together we discussed the design for Postcast, how we could make it as simple and clear as possible. We asked him to illustrate the cover of Lucas Mol’s Postcast. That edition has yet to be published.
