Here at the Post Growth Institute, we collaboratively develop ideas, programs, events, and alliances that promote the equitable circulation of money, power, and natural resources in our local communities and global economy. Each month we publish an overview of our key activities and impact through the various pillars of our work.

Post growth stories

As the PGI team prepares for the third cohort of the 2024 Post Growth Fellowship, we‘re taking a moment to appreciate the delightfully unexpected ways fellows are weaving their work together and all the alternative pathways beyond capitalism being offered. All content published by Fellows in 2023 has been compiled in this review, including articles, vlogs, and podcasts.

We’re also celebrating mission moments, such as when followers email to notify us how the Post Growth Jobs Board helped them land a new position! Browse the board for new hirings and links to other job boards.

I got a job with Hot or Cool through PGI’s job board…. So thank you for that great resource :)

Post growth events

The quarterly, public Offers and Needs Market (OANM) welcomed over 100 participants to two virtual sessions on January 24. International attendees gathered to experience the radically effective and simple act of solidarity economics by engaging in non-extractive forms of exchange. For updates on upcoming events, visit the Offers and Needs Market website.

M. Felix Macaraeg, Organizing Director of the Beloved Community Incubator, says of the OANM:

The OANM has tremendous potential as a cultural organizing method to help us understand "solidarity economy" by practicing it relationally — I plan to engage local co-op and solidarity economy leaders in spreading this tool in multiple languages, and across tech and literacy barriers! Super excited to keep working with the OANM team!

In addition, we’re excited to see 2023 Post Growth Fellow Mariana Villegas leading an energy democracy module in Synergia Institute’s online course, Toward Co-operative Commonwealth: Transition in a Perilous Century. All are welcome to join at any point in the curriculum — dive into the conversations already happening in Week One!

Meanwhile, our Co-Director of Research & Writing, Lina Lefstad, and Post Growth Affiliate, Lena Bjärskog, presented at a Nordic gathering in Copenhagen, Denmark dedicated to mapping out post-growth opportunities and challenges in respective countries and organizations. Discussion highlights included:

  • 🖋️ The importance of new narratives and key concepts like feelings, privilege, power, decolonialism, masculinity
  • 🖋️ Unpacking “Nordic exceptionalism” and how the idea of “the Nordics being ahead” is a stumbling block
  • 🖋️ Addressing the misconceptions of post-growth theory and how scepticism is often based on ideas of sacrifice, scarcity and overall poverty whereas the opposite is true
  • 🖋️ The Post Growth Institute’s practices to embody post-capitalist living and work culture.

Organizing groups for this gathering included Copenhagen Doughnut, Rethinking Economics Norway, Rethinking Economics Denmark, and Wellbeing Alliance Sweden.
