Post Growth Ripples: October 2022
From Free Money Day coverage to an inspiring talk on post-growth economics and the launch of our upcoming Offers and Needs Market Advanced Facilitator Training.
--
Here at the Post Growth Institute, we collaboratively develop ideas, programs, events, and alliances that promote the equitable circulation of money, power, and natural resources in our local communities and global economy. Each month we publish an overview of our key activities and impact through the various pillars of our work.
Post-Growth Living
This month we are thrilled to welcome Gabriela Safay back to the PGI, this time as Director of Wellbeing. Gabriela worked with us previously in the Offers and Needs Market circle, and shared some inspiring thoughts upon her recent return:
It was also great to see Post Growth Fellow Mike Strode’s article on valuing what matters in a post-growth society republished on Resilience.
And, as the very first Post Growth Fellowship draws to a close, we reflected on what we learned in the inspiring inaugural year.
Free Money Day 2022
Following Free Money Day on September 15th, Post Growth Institute team members, Emma River-Roberts and Priscilla Trinh, shared their reflections on the day—as well as speaking to people who had hosted their own events across the world.
The event also garnered coverage in Turkey, Portugal, the Netherlands, and South Korea.
It was also great to see peer-to-peer, open source cryptocurrency Nano tweet about Free Money Day to their 150,000 followers…
…as well as some interesting discussions about the event on Reddit and a free bag-making workshop hosted in the spirit of Free Money Day!
Post-Growth Entrepreneurship
The work of former PGI co-director, Jen Hinton, and Executive Director, Donnie Maclurcan, was featured on a recent episode of the Accidental Gods podcast, which explored how the “world would look if all businesses existed to promote wellbeing in all its forms.”
Meanwhile, we’ve just finished another round of Offers and Needs Market (OANM) Facilitator Training, with 35 trainees from around the world. As the course came to a close, it was heartening to read some participants’ reflections on their experience:
“I enjoy the facilitation style and pace, and how OANM’s focus on strengths and relationship building.”
“It flows like water, we are contained.”
“It feels very well prepared, with a focus on inclusivity and time for reflection.”
“I’m recognizing that the OANM is intuitive and already happening in many communities, especially those under-resourced or marginalized.”
“In our breakout group we saw in action how inclusive design supports the sense of psychological safety, started with 4 people with cameras off and wanting to be observers to one by one feeling comfortable talking and we eventually all spoke up.”
Post-Growth Economics
Donnie recently delivered a presentation on post-growth economics to the Denizen Clubhouse, a “community that recognizes the need to redesign the beliefs, values, and institutions that underpin society.”
