Here at the Post Growth Institute, we collaboratively develop ideas, programs, events, and alliances that promote the equitable circulation of money, power, and resources in our local communities and global economy. Each month we publish an overview of our key activities and impact through the various pillars of our work.

Further to our announcement last month about a game-changing grant of $250,000, we can now share that our funder is One Project, a non-profit initiative working globally with communities on new forms of governance and economics that are equitable, ecological, and effective. It’s particularly inspiring — and validating — to see the journey that One Project founder Justin Rosenstein has traveled, from the heart of capitalism, playing lead roles at Silicon Valley firms like Google and Facebook, to supporting post-growth initiatives like ours — via a profound understanding that “the world could work for everyone, and work better for everyone, if we collaborated toward mutually beneficial outcomes, as one team.”

As we begin the new year with hope and ambition, we also took a look back at the stories our friend and followers loved exploring in 2021— from degrowth and sociocracy to agroecology and healing from the trauma of patriarchy.

Post-Growth Living

On January 21st, the PGI’s Director of Education, Crystal Arnold, spoke on the topic of “Cultivating a Post Growth Culture” as part of a series of online events for the Praxis Peace Institute.

Post-Growth Entrepreneurship

In a recent article based on the groundbreaking work of Post Growth Fellow Dr. Cle-Anne Gabriel and her colleagues, we shared how renewable energy enterprises in countries from Cambodia to Cameroon are focusing on social and environmental impact while deprioritizing economic growth, and why Dr. Gabriel believes the Global South is uniquely placed to lead in the transition away from growth-based success metrics.

Meanwhile, Post Growth Fellow Dr. Melanie Rieback’s interview about putting post growth theory into practice was republished on Resilience.org.

Post-Growth Economics

As Chile’s new, progressive government promises to address long-term inequalities, Post Growth Fellow, Gabriela Cabaña, explored how degrowth could lead to a different society — one focused on free and flourishing lives for all.

Also, Post Growth Fellow Robert Wanalo’s article about holistic economics was republished on Resilience.org.

How our work is changing us

This month, the PGI’s Fellowship Director, Jessica Lavelle, shares how her experiences have rippled out far beyond the work.

The Post Growth Institute embodies a culture of profound humility, openness, and encouragement which nurtures my learning, deepens my self-reflection, and enables me to engage with others.

The fruition has been the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and direct the inaugural Post Growth Fellowship, a profound experience to bring together leaders from around the world in post-growth research, activism, and entrepreneurship. Through working together with the Fellows I feel inspired to be bolder and more courageous to find my own voice and share the life-giving possibilities of post-growth economics within my own community and beyond.

What’s next

Among our big plans for this year, we’re developing the Post Growth Encyclopedia — an online, searchable database that celebrates and connects people to cross-cultural practices, approaches, and ideas that can inspire a faster, more holistic transition to a regenerative, post-growth future. Twenty-twenty-two will also see the launch of our second Post Growth Fellowship cohort.
