For companies, marketers, influencers and curious users like me and you, here’s an interesting list of social media facts. Let’s begin with some general numbers:

  • There are over 4.2 billion active Internet users
  • Around 3 billion people have a social media account
  • On average, people spend 116 minutes a day on social media
  • Facebook & WhatsApp handle over 60 million messages every day

Some downsides of social media:

  • You can’t entirely delete your social media posts
  • Students who spend long hours on social media tend to have lower grades
  • Social media causes personality and eating disorders, low self-esteem and even depression

Which platform has the most users?

Facebook: 2,271 billion

Instagram: 1 billion

Wechat: 1.12 billion

YouTube: 1.5 billion

WhatsApp: 900 million

Linkedin: 562 million

Reddit: 542 million

Twitter: 326 million

Don’t forget that behind all these social media giants are companies with just one goal: to earn money.

In 2016, $40 billion was spent on social media advertising. In 2015, social networks like Facebook and Instagram earned around $8.3 billion from the ads on their platforms.

Let’s dive deeper and explore some Facebook statistics:

  • Around 68% of Americans use Facebook
  • Facebook gets 500,000 new users every day, or 6 new profiles every second
  • There are 60 million active business pages on the platform
  • 50 million Facebook users were affected after the infamous data breach

Instagram Statistics

  • 90% of Instagram users are younger than 35
  • The most liked picture on the platform is one of an egg
  • 71% of Americans actively use the platform
  • Instagram belongs to Facebook

Social media is a fascinating phenomenon. Although many people talk about how ANTIsocial it has made us and how harmful it is for kids, we can’t deny it has advantages. Let’s not forget how many revolutions and social movements started thanks to social media (Me Too movement, Black Lives Matter, etc.). Let’s not forget how many people find community and the opportunity to share inspiration and encouragement through social media.

We can decide to use social media to build castles or burn them. That’s our choice.

But for too long, we haven’t had a choice about how our data and content will be used by social media companies. It’s unbelievable that in 2019 we still have to fight for our fundamental right to privacy.

On that note, here are some facts about a unique new social network, POP. It’s the social network we’ve all been waiting for:

  • It’s the most private app out there since all its users own their data
  • All content is protected, and the authors are the ones who get credit for each like and share
  • POP hasn’t been released yet, but hundreds of people are waiting to join the community
  • POP is a revolution in the social media market since it’s the first one to enable its users to profit from their content, followers and data.
