Grow your own — Rob Charlwood
Rob Charlwood is a developer based at our Bristol studio who makes small scale models in his spare time…
During my awesome day job as a developer at Potato I need to be precise, logical and pragmatic at all times. Outside of work however, I like to get away from that for a while and spread my creative wings, which helps me unwind and relax.
I found that small scale model building was a great way to spend my free time and let my imagination run loose.
It all started when I saw somebody scratch build a Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars franchise on YouTube. I decided I’d like to try my hand at that. Two days later I was taking delivery of an Amazon box filled with an airbrush, craft knife, some glue and a small selection of paints. I’ve been hooked ever since.
The thing I love most about this hobby is when I’m doing it, I’m living completely in the now. I’m not thinking about the bills, the car failing its MOT or how I’m going to solve the multitude of problems that life likes to throw at us. I’m completely present in the moment, calm and peaceful. So it’s not only a fun way to spend a little free time, its also great for your mental health and wellbeing.
I have also found that this has helped me in the day job. I can be more creative in my work and I can solve problems in an innovative way by taking an ‘outside the box’ approach to my ideas. This means I spend less time working out ‘how’ to build cool stuff and more time ‘building’ cool stuff.
