Go After What You Want

Having options, opportunities and a chance not to settle is a privilege.

A privilege many of us are afraid of taking.

We’re living in a time of uncertainty and we are proving we can deal with it, yet we frequently resist seeking change in our personal lives.

How often do you avoid going after what you want or reaching into the unknown out of fear?

I’ll go first. I have a desire to solo travel and a passion for acting, I think about them both on a day to day basis. But I continue to dodge opportunities into exploring them.

But why? Why do our desires sometimes scare us?

Maybe it’s the fear of judgement from others or a lack of confidence. Maybe it’s just the risk of failure itself.

To go after what you genuinely want in life, you have to reveal your true self which requires vulnerability and taking off the mask which also brings a lot of fear and self doubt.

We torture ourselves over the what ifs, and end up deciding it’s easier to just forget about it.

OR

We wait for things to happen instead of putting things in place to get there.

I think we need to get to a stage where going after what we want outweighs the risk or judgement it comes with.

In the past, our culture has been around working. You take what you can and settle when you can, but that’s changing.

Guess what? You CAN scrap the traditional way of living and follow your inner passions. Yes, it’s exciting and thrilling and terrifying all at the same time.

But shouldn’t that be what life’s about?

Big or small, I’m going to continue to stick to the cliques. It is NEVER too late to learn a new skill, get a new job, end a relationship or move to a new place.

Sometimes you have to make difficult choices to better your life.

Here’s a few little reminders that have helped me take on new opportunities recently:

  1. Every opportunity can be undone (nothing is set in stone).
  2. The alternative is scarier (passing up opportunities may calm your fears momentarily but it’s much scarier to think about what you might of missed out on).
  3. It’s OKAY to be nervous (s*** yourself with pride).

Growth doesn’t come easy, but trust in the fact it’s worth it.
