How Your Giving Multiplies in God’s Hands

Have you ever wondered what happens when you give? God’s Word says plenty about it. However, we won’t get into everything, but let’s examine one passage (with the loaves and fishes in mind when Jesus multiplied the loaves and fish that the boy had).

2 Corinthians 9:6–15: “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men, and by their prayer for you, who long for you because of the exceeding grace of God in you. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”

While I don’t think our motivation should be for the reward, God says that He will reward those who give. Let’s look at the 3 ways your donations help:

1. Immediate — Provide for the needs of the person in need

When you give, the person you’re helping is benefited. Sometimes, as seen in the story of the loaves and fish, even that gift gets multiplied immediately.

When you identify a need and help provide towards it, you’re helping a need as Jesus’ hands and feet. That’s the role of today’s Disciples — we represent Jesus (even though obviously we aren’t Him), as we’re followers of Christ and in His family.

2. Mid-term — You receive earthly benefits

Many times, God gives back to you in earthly benefits (whether it’s actual money or in other ways). Take note of this, as you’ll see it’s true in your life as well (even if we don’t always see it).

What you give is sometimes even multiplied back to you. However, of more importance is the next point:

3. Long-term — You reap Eternal benefits

When you give, you also are piling up Eternal benefits for yourself (as long as the motives are pure and you don’t brag about your giving).

This is one of God’s biggest promises — that we will be rewarded for what we do here on earth. This doesn’t mean that our salvation is based on our works — but, it’s important to note that our giving continues on to Eternity. For this reason, Christians should be (and for the most part are) the most generous people on earth.
