Health and Representation

Delta — Watching for the Wrong Reasons

Access to trans healthcare is something close to my heart, as many of my friends — and on some level I as well — are affected by it. Many people are under-educated about this topic, and it makes it extremely difficult for my friends and I to feel safe and comfortable. The lack of representation and understanding makes it turbulent and scary to come out, which I felt needed emphasis in this piece. Many people are watching and questioning us, and few seem to have good intent.

Ethan Chiu — In a Blink

This project is an art piece that is meant to show the lack of visible LGBTQ+ representation in the media. Many shows and movie studios have queer characters that are minor or have short scenes, which can be easily missed if the audience isn’t paying attention. These studios have been praised for their inclusion of queer characters, but in the majority of the movies, those characters are barely relevant to the story. If the queer character can be so easily missed, can it really be considered representation?

Hector — Can I Get Treatment

Tori — The Forest and the Trees

I made this project to express just how important representation of groups in all their different forms and in many forms of media is to fostering an understanding of what unifies its members, what problems they face, and who they are. Around this forest there are various details that all contribute to the whole. Each photograph is captioned with a fundamental misunderstanding of the forest based exclusively on the perspective of that single photo. The only way to actually know what the forest is like is to look at it from many different angles, perspectives, and magnitudes.
