Getting Lost And Finding Your Passion

Do you ever get immersed in what you’re doing, so deeply that even the outside world seems to cease to exist?

You may have heard people refer to this as “I’m in the zone”.

In positive psychology, being in the zone, also knows as a flow state, is the mental state of operation where you are fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus.

According to Wikipedia, people who have experienced flow, describe the following feelings:

  • Completely involved in what we are doing — focused, concentrated.
  • A sense of ecstasy — of being outside everyday reality.
  • Great inner clarity — knowing what needs to be done, and how well we are doing.
  • Great self-confidence — that our skills are adequate to the task.
  • A sense of serenity — no worries about oneself, and a feeling of growing beyond the boundaries of the ego.
  • Timelessness — thoroughly focused on the present, hours seem to pass by the minute.
  • Intrinsic motivation — whatever produces flow becomes its own reward.

So how exactly is a flow state helpful to finding your passion?

I look at it the other way around.

If you find yourself having experienced a flow state, you’ve probably just found a deeper connection with whatever it is you were doing.

Examine what you were doing, what brought you into that flow state.

Whatever it was is probably something you enjoy on a deep level.

Explore that thing and you may find it leads you to a passion.

Happy exploring!
