As Black Friday rolls around year after year, new lunacy rears it’s head: crushing, deadly stampedes while waiting for big box retailers to open, fist-fights over heavily discounted appliances, shoppers literally stealing toys out of the hands of waiting babies, mouths agape in a burgeoning, surprised welp.

And then Black Friday somehow turned into Black Thursday, with retailers summoning their legions of hard-working employees from their Thanksgiving harvest tables with promise of pay-and-a-half in exchange for missed family time. Gluttony takes on new meaning as consumers rush out the door, half-eaten turkey leg still in hand, to glean the generous savings found by shopping on the traditional day of gratitude. Being with loved ones turned into shopping for loved ones, instead.

This year, retailers such as T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Home Goods, Costco and DSW will not only keep their stores closed this Thanksgiving day (online is another story), but they have publicly made that position known via advertising campaigns such as this sentimental spot… which is likely driving their online sales:

Regardless of the impetus behind these marketing exhibitions, we at PowerToFly, a platform promoting better work/life balance, commend these companies that care, showing not just compassion as a special occasion, but an everyday occurrence.

For that reason, we developed our pledge, partnering with brands who are committed to treating their employees with the respect and kindness they deserve. We all deserve warmth and understanding, regardless of location. But locations void of good will? The stampede outside the big box retailer, the atmosphere surrounding the fisticuffs over a TV, and the black heart of a person who stole a toy from a child.

PowerToFly‘s mission is simple: encourage diversity recruiting and hiring by leveraging the tools and employer branding services that committed businesses and enterprises need.
