As a data scientist at PowerToFly, I frequently analyze various data sets across our business to understand how we can place more women with companies that value gender diversity and inclusion. Our marketing team recently asked me to support them on a social listening project for the HR Tech 2016 conference, which some of our staff attended. Social listening is a process of monitoring digital conversations to understand what people are saying about topics, industry events or brands online.

I discovered a number of correlations between the word “women” and other phrases from analyzing 6,400 tweets from the conference. (For a detailed breakdown of how I mined this text, click here).

From the text I mined, I encountered the word “women” 116 times, and the word “tech” nearly 400 times. The combination of both — “womenintech” — was encountered only 17 times. Some interesting words that popped up alongside “women” included “change,” and “awesome.” See the word cloud below for a visual representation of my analysis.

The Wordcloud that represent frequent words used in the tweets I analyzed

I also searched for associations of terms like “Women,” “Tech,” “Recruit,” and “Inclusion.” The results are shown in the table below. It is fascinating that the word “women” is associated with the word “fearless” with 60 percent correlation weight (which is how frequently the terms encountered in a combination). The word “tech” was used with “women” with a strength of 24 percent. It is no surprise that the term “inclusion” was associated with “flexible,” while words like “tool,” “machine,” and “guide” showed many associations with the word “recruit.”

The associations of key words I discovered

The takeaway? We’re celebrating the strong association between fearlessness and women, and we agree that the term “change” is an important one when it comes to women at work. Ideally, the discussion of women in tech would show up in more than 17 attendee tweets. However, we give major props to HR Tech Conference for their incredible panels about women in tech. Next year, we hope women in tech make that wordcloud in big, bold letters!
