The Accusations Against Jerry Lawler That Won’t Disappear

Over 30 years later, his guilt is still in question

Recently, a social media post about an old news article on Jerry “The King” Lawler went viral on X and Reddit. The story was from 1993, and detailed Lawler’s arrest in Louisville, Ky on accusations of statutory rape.

I was a 10-year-old WWF fan from Louisville at the time of this event. I can remember when Lawler was in a feud with Bret Hart, and there was a scheduled Survivor Series match between the two. Then, for some reason, Lawler was off TV and replaced by Shawn Micheals (they still kept the masked “knights, " which made little sense given they didn’t match Micheals's gimmick). WWF was pretty hush-hush on the reason Lawler was off TV, but I remember hearing some stories of him being accused of rape. This was in the 1990s, so the internet was not even a thing yet. And, of course, parents weren’t going into details.

A few months later, Lawler was back on TV, which seemed to be the end. Charges had been dropped, and life went on. But then there were little hints that there was more to the story. And as I got older and the internet allowed me…
