Professional wrestling is highly popular in Mexico. The Mexican style of wrestling, known as lucha libre, showcases high-flying maneuvers, masks, and fast-moving action in the ring. This style of wrestling has since been adopted by many of today’s wrestlers all over the world. Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (or simply AAA) and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) are Mexico’s largest and most popular companies. Household names like Eddie Guerrero, Andrade, Konnan, and Rey Mysterio, Jr. started in lucha libre.

As exciting as the world of Mexican Wrestling is, plenty of dark stories exist. From murders, mysterious vanishings, corruption, and ties to drug cartels, the world of lucha libre is not without its controversy. This article will look at a few stories from south of the border.

Trademarking Wrestling Names

AAA wrestling was founded by Antonio Pena in 1992. Pena was a luchador himself before retiring in 1986. His organization became one of the largest and most popular lucha libre organizations in Mexico after breaking off from CMLL. Pena ran the organization until he died in 2006.
