Telegram is by far the most used platform by ICOs to communicate with their community! But, in some way it has become a victim of its own success, everyone that has used telegram recently has noticed the recent wave of scammers specially in bigger telegram groups and it is not even uncommon to see over 10 scams attempts daily!

To ensure that your community members are prepared for such scammers we listed a few of the many ways in which scammers will try to use Telegram to take advantage of your community members!

The Announcement/News Scammer — this type of scammer, will constantly spam the room during agitated times, normally during the token sale phase. They will post something that appears to be an official announcement with the project logo or images of well known team members. It normally leads to a page that looks very identical to the true website hoping that someone eventually buys the tokens through the fake website and he keeps all the ETH. This type of scammers can also appear as a fan of the project and repeatedly post information and links that seem to be helpful, but, this links are modified to look genuine and lead to fake websites.

The Friendly Scammer — this type of scammer, pretends to be a team member offering discounts if you buy the tokens early or simply try and “help” you buy the tokens. This scammers imitate team members and Telegram admins by copying avatars and using names so similar that you would hardly differentiate between the real and the fake team member. This is type of scammers often prey on the beginners by pretending to be helpful team members and “help” them buy the tokens.

The Sneaky Editing Scammer — this type of scammer, asks the admin simple yes or no questions and later edits the questions to look like the group admin is endorsing a website (that is fake) to purchase the tokens.

Sadly, scamming is a lucrative business for many, and for each ETH stolen by the scammers means that less funds will be raised for the project. And due to being a lucrative business it’s also one that keeps evolving and scamming techniques are getting more and more sophisticated. To combat this, education and capable and experienced Community Managers are needed. An Experienced Community Manager and Team can successfully minimize the amount of ETH scammed, resulting in more funds for the project!
