Jumping into the world of streaming and influencer marketing can be a bit intimidating; especially when sponsorships begin to enter into the mix! Not only do you have to get the right equipment set up for your stream, but you also have to have to take into consideration key terms. It can feel a bit overwhelming with all the new terms thrown at them.

Powerspike has set out to create an official dictionary to help become familiar with terms, and hopefully learn some new ones, to help level up your vocabulary!

Let’s start off simple:

Are you a content creator, a streamer, an influencer?

Content Creator — Otherwise known as a Streamer or Influencer. This is someone who live-streams on Twitch (or other broadcasting platforms) playing games, podcasting, creating art, etc.

Influencer — Otherwise known as a Content Creator or Streamer. This is someone who live-streams on Twitch (or other broadcasting platforms) playing games, podcasting, creating art, etc.

It’s actually a bit of a trick question since, as a streamer, you’re actually both! These two terms can be used interchangeably and, many times, you will see it being used as such. While this can be a bit confusing, Powerspike tends to prefer the umbrella term of “influencer” and it’s used largely on our website and IG.

Twitch related terms:

There are many different aspects of Twitch that can take a minute to get used to. Terminology can be one of them! Confused at what a chatbot is? What exactly is a whisper?

Chatbot — A chatbot is a program developed for livestreaming services (such as Twitch) that help with automated chat moderation, messages, and commands. Chatbots can be set up to automatically post a predetermined message in specific time intervals and provide additional information when a command is used (such as !schedule).

Viewer — Those who watch a livestream at any given time.

Whisper — A private message sent on Twitch. Only the sender and recipient can read the messages and respond to each other.

Level up with more marketing-oriented terms:

For streamers, there are a lot of terms to learn when coming into the sponsorship/streaming arena. Some, like influencer, generated content, are relatively easy to put together through context clues while others such as earned media value can be a bit tricky to the first-time streamer. Powerspike is here to help incorporate these terms into your everyday streaming vernacular and get you talking to like a marketing pro in no time!

Asset — Digital file or document that is used for branding purposes or marketing activity. Typical assets include - panel art image, brand logo, video marketing, etc.

Awareness — Marketing that gets the brand recognized by potential customers, measured by the degree of consumer recognition of the product or brand. (ex. Brand awareness on social media)

Branding — Branding is a marketing practice in which a company or individual creates a name, symbol, or design that is easily identifiable and distinguishable from other brands.

Clicks/Click-throughs — the action of following a hyperlink to a particular website from a unique IP address. Clicks are measured with Powerspike Tracking Links.

Conversion — When a visitor to a website completes a desired goal such as filling out a form or making a purchase.

Cost Per Click (CPC) — A calculation as to how much the brand pays for each click they receive from an influencer’s audience.

Demographics — The characteristics of an audience, such as age, location, gender, languages, income, etc.

Earned Media Value — Earned media refers to any type of social media exposure gained through word-of-mouth, recommendations, or conversations about the brand. This form of media includes user-generated content, reviews, brand mentions, or any other form of content that is shared by social media users in relation to a brand.

Influencer generated content — When an influencer creates content based on their experiences with a product or service.

These are just a few examples of many of the terms you’ll find sprinkled throughout sponsorships and in influencer marketing. Want more? Follow us on IG where every week, we level up your vocabulary with more terms!
