Natural hair isn’t just a movement. For some, it’s a lifestyle.

The widespread standard of straighter hair being more presentable is still prominent but the natural hair movement has made strong strides to falsify this perception.

Natural hair is more accepted in workplaces and formal events than it has ever been. Despite this, people, especially women, still notice how they receive different looks and approaches when they are wearing their natural curls compared to when they aren’t.

Situations like these promote confidence in changing a stigma by defying the odds and wearing more natural hairstyles.

“Different types of guys approach me when my hair curly versus when it is straightened. I love my curls though and wear them all the time,” Rochelly Martinez said. Photo by Addison Robinson.

“I notice that since I fell in love with my curls, people actually hype me up more when they see my afro. Especially strangers. But when I wear a wig, it’s like ‘oh your hair looks nice’,” YouTube influencer Arnelle Konde said. Photo by Addison Robinson.
