One of the hardest parts of my narcissistic abuse journey has been honesty. Being raised in a dysfunctional household, you’re taught to keep secrets before you’re taught anything about yourself.

You keep the secrets of your parents, your siblings. And they keep yours. It’s a toxic and vicious cycle that keeps us dishonest with ourselves most of all.

Breaking out of that cycle broke me open. It exposed me in horrible ways and made me afraid both of loving and being perceived.

For me to find peace, to find success, I had to accept reality. I had to accept who I was, what had happened to me, and how it had shaped me into the person I am today.

The hardest part of this acceptance was realizing that my world had forever been changed.

That’s the real rub of waking up and escaping from the narcissistic parent or the narcissistic family. You begin to realize that everything is different. In that difference, too, you realize that every generation of your family has forever been changed.
