The internet has completely bastardized the term “narcissist”. Watered down by half-cocked gurus and those following trends, it’s become synonymous with any self-centered person who displeases us. Those who have experienced true narcissists, however, know that this isn’t the reality. Uncovering the narcissist is not so easy as looking for a self-centered person.

That’s because narcissism transcends simple selfishness. It’s far more complex than someone with grandiose ideas of themselves or a person who sucks all the air out of the room.

A real narcissist isn’t always the biggest asshole in the room. They’re not always the one talking about their accomplishments or how cool they are. Narcissists are far more complex than that, and their behaviors build into patterns. Each narcissist manifests differently, but one central truth holds true.

True narcissists are those who are most at-odds with themselves. When you’ve peeked behind the emerald curtain, it’s apparent. Far from the monster who truly believes themselves worthy of the world, narcissists are people who live their lives in patterns of self-failure and disappointment.
