We have all been in a terrible relationship (or two). Whether you’re new to the game, or a longtime player, then you’ve probably come across someone who hurt you, betrayed you, or took from you in some kind of detrimental way. The pain of these awful relationships lingers, but they teach us some valuable lessons too. Even while the pain recedes, we learn things about ourselves — and others — that we may never have had the ability to see before.

Lessons we learn from bad relationships.

Valuable lessons are often the only silver lining we can take from these toxic connections with people who hurt us. Yes, the pain inflicted in soul-shattering relationships wounds us in deep ways. But they also teach us that there’s more to a successful relationship than love, and that there’s more than just romantic love to value in the world.

Romantic love isn’t the only love
