At Practical, we believe in community. Like many of you, we have been involved in various communities throughout our careers. Some of them have been wonderful places where we have grown and felt the desire to get involved and contribute back. Others have been places where the interaction feels impersonal, lacking, and disappointing.

It is our desire to foster the type of community that inspires you, advances your goals, and keeps you coming back day after day, week after week, for years to come.

Our Strategy:

Our goal for building the Practical community is to focus on “the four Ps”. PASSION, PRIDE, PARTICIPATION, and PERKS.

  • Passion — Our passion is paramount to our success. We are building the future of a fundamental technology shift. Showing you, our community, that we are all in, and that it is ok for you to join us in building this future will cement the foundations of success for the Practical community, AR as a technology, and the AR Cloud as a platform.
  • Pride We are building a company, a technology, and a future on the back of you. From our apps, to our mapping, to our data generation, we rely on our community to see our future realized. Having pride in what we are building, and having our community take pride in their part is paramount. It’s our responsibility to promote and show pride in all the contributions of our community, and so celebrate the pride they have in being a part of it.
  • Participation — A community is empty without participants. We will encourage participation by providing the lowest barrier to entry possible, along with the full support and passion of our company. The more our community feels like they belong, and is in a place where they want to be, then participation in the community will come as a natural part of the process. Our job is to provide the environment, resources, and knowledge to make the participants successful.
  • Perks — Passion, Pride, and Participation are all things that are necessary to build a strong community around Practical. The perks are the fun stuff. We want to make sure that we are rewarding our community members who are most active, most helpful, and most influential. Whether it is via small things like random goodie swag bags, early access to new features, or something more substantial, we want to make sure that we are taking care of the people who are helping us to build the future vision that we have planned.

Specific initiatives:

  • Open Office Hours — We want to make ourselves super accessible to our community. As such, we want to invite you to join us for Open Office Hours. These will be times where we will make ourselves available via voice, and soon, video chat. Come ask us about Practical, HoloLens, Mixed Reality, Cryptocurrencies and Tokens, or even the weather. Bonus points for those who want to discuss BBQ and Tacos! In addition to Jesse holding these regular office hours, we will also be inviting other members of the Practical staff to these sessions as well. They will be able to speak to their expertise in things like 3D Art, Design and UX, Front End Design, Back End Design, API Design, etc.
  • Workshops and Lunch n’ learns — In wanting to make sure that we are contributing back to the wider community, we will be scheduling Lunch n’ Learn sessions where we will have a subject matter expert give a presentation and also take questions. We will start recording these sessions in the future in order to have a repository of them that people can revisit later.
  • Open source contributions — Practical is committed to contributing to the open source projects that we use, now and into the future. We are also committed to accepting code contributions to our SDK and future libraries we open up.
  • AMAs — These sessions hosted on Reddit will be open game to ask anything of us. We will likely do a few of these, as a company as well as individuals within our company. These are a fun forum for getting questions answered.

Global Community

Every day it is being proven that the technology community knows no borders! We are committed to making sure that we respect this by taking care that we have open office hours that reach time zones across the globe so that it’s not on you to connect with us after your normal business hours. We will also work on getting as much content recorded so that you may view it at your convenience.
