If you’re a writer, travel doesn’t mean a break from writing.

I’m not saying writers are “hardos.” This isn’t the coach Bill Belichick’s “no days off” approach to life. I’m not writing on the road to get ahead. I write for the same reason people exercise on vacation, so I can enjoy the rest of the day guilt free.

I got the idea of a portable writing routine from the Austin native writer and artist Austin Kleon. Here’s his routine.

A few simple checkboxes to help you write great articles — from anywhere.

Here are five rituals that work for me.

Read Out On The Town

There’s something magical when you read about the place you’re visiting while you’re in that place.

You give context to the streets you walk on, life to statues and structures, and empathy to its people.

While studying abroad in Paris, I’d read my copy of Hemingway’s “A Moveable Feast” at a golden age bistro in the 16th Arrondissement. A bar Hemingway could have frequented. Who knows?
