Having your website gives you the freedom to publish whatever content you want when you want. And building your website has never been easier than it is today.

However, there are countless options you can choose from: they range from website-like platforms to coding your website from scratch.

But which one to choose?

In this step-by-step guide, I want to show you my favorite option (GitHub pages), and how you can use it to build your website and host it for free.

Why I created my website

I had experience with WordPress and self-hosting (just for learning I tried it out), but I never really became fond of WordPress as it seemed somewhat maintenance intensive.

And I didn’t “need” a website back then.

However, that changed once I started online writing.

The question was: where do I want to publish my articles? There are many options:

  • Platforms: There are a lot of great platforms to publish your writing online (Medium, Substack, …). And they are great. You don’t need to deal with running and maintaining your website at all. Instead, you can focus on the writing itself. However…
