[Caveat, for purposes of this article “God” is your personal definition of God, Buddha… the Higher Power of your choice. There is no intent to try and impose another version of God on you that is not your own.]

Using someone is so “violent.” No one treats someone they care about that way. Especially God. If God is just using you, it assumes God is only trying to get stuff done and you’re a tool for His purposes, nothing more.

It’s a Partnership

A better way to view a relationship with your Higher Power is to look at it like a partnership. God is a Partner. Even better, Senior Partner.

The partnership metaphor is appropriate in a number of ways.

  • Agent/Fiduciary. In a partnership each partner is an agent/fiduciary for the other and for the partnership entity. That means you act on behalf of God, and God acts on behalf of you. And you both act on behalf of the partnership.
  • Duty of loyalty. As a fiduciary you can’t have a conflict of interest. You can’t pursue other interests that are in conflict with the partnership.
  • Duty of care. Your fiduciary duty means you need to take care…
