What I know about escaping the 9-to-5.

I’m not sure who sold you the idea that your early twenties were the dream.

On paper it makes sense, finally free of the shackles of education, the system, your parents, relying on other people.

It’s liberating… finally, you can do what you want, you don’t have to ask anybody’s permission — you are your own person.

You can leave the dishes on the side, you can watch Netflix until 3 am, and you can go out whenever you want.

No rules. Nobody is telling you what you can and can’t do. You can be whoever you want. Do whatever you want.

The question

But you come across a question you might not have asked yourself before…

What do you want?

When I got my place on a corporate graduate scheme I thought I was set. My LinkedIn profile looked good, my future looked bright, and I had a plan to save for a mortgage.

I didn’t really think about my life on the graduate scheme, I just knew I needed a good-sounding job to make me feel like I was doing life right.
