How to Keep Up a Writing Habit When Your Daily Routine Doesn’t Follow a Pattern
Simple steps to make the most of your time
I read with envy about writers here and elsewhere who have a daily routine. They set the alarm for 5 am every day and finish their 2 hours of writing before work.
I don’t work 9–5.
I also know what I’m like. I’d get up early once, maybe twice and then slip back into my old habits.
Because of my job as a self-employed funeral celebrant, some days I have no work.
Perversely, those days are the worst because I can see an entire day stretching out ahead of me.
That’s when I procrastinate the most.
Having hours and hours ahead of me means that all I’ll do is think I’ve got hours and hours to do the work so I’ll keep putting it off.
Some days I’m out all day. Those days there’s no chance of me devoting any significant time to writing.
But,
I try to write something.
Every day.
Even if it’s a tiny amount. Even if it’s only a sentence, editing an article, or changing a headline.
