I Don’t Have A Niche as an Online Writer
I have a community I help instead
You’ll be told over and over again in the online writing space that you need a niche. I disagree (to a certain extent). I don’t have a niche. I write about a wide range of different topics, and I make a living doing it.
What I do have, instead of a niche, is a community of readers who I help. Because here’s the thing. Very few people are only interested in one topic. Most are interested in a wide range of topics.
I’ve been building a community of readers for several years. I have over 26,000 followers here on Medium, and over 1,000 subscribers to my Substack newsletter that I started less than a year ago.
What I do aim to do is write for a certain kind of person. An ideal reader, if you like. Or at least a community of readers who are basically my little tribe of like-minded humans.

- Curious
- Caring
- Humanitarian
- Eager to have a positive impact on the world
- Willing to try new things
- Busy and just generally short of time
