I Make Good Money From My Self-Published Book

But almost none of it comes from book sales

Around ten years ago I wrote and published a short, simple, but useful Kindle book called Free Tools For Writers, Bloggers, and Solopreneurs.

It became a bestseller in its category on Amazon and has been in and out of the bestselling-in-category charts ever since. I’ve updated it six times, and have now sold over 10,000 copies on Kindle. I sell it for 99 cents, get a cut of around 35%, and make good money from it.

How do I do that? Not through book sales, obviously. 35% of 99 cents is not good money, even if you multiply it by 10,000.

Instead I make money from my book indirectly, using what I’ve come to think of as my AAA approach:

  • Audience Building
  • Authority
  • Affiliate Sales

Let’s take a look at each of them.

Audience Building

Building and nurturing an audience is a non-negotiable for those writing online in the twenty first century. The attention economy shapes my success as a writer, and has done for a while.

Google updates have arguably made it harder than ever for the average blogger to bring in traffic from Search Engine…
