Writing online is tough.

Everyone wants to start on day one and get $1 million. And only some of us know what we are doing. We want to get far in our writing career. But we’re lost.

I used to be in your shoes—a lost and confused writer.

But after writing for 17 months on Medium, I’ve learned 3 simple tips that surprisingly refined my writing. And I wish I had known them earlier.

Let me show you.

Read, Read, Read

Reading takes you far in this writing game.

But I don’t mean to spend your entire time reading. The idea is to have the right combination of writing and reading articles.

Many writers think their writing is as perfect as a pure diamond. But we couldn’t be more wrong. We’re so proud that we can’t read from others and find ways to improve.

Don’t be one of those writers.

Here are the questions I ask when I read articles:

  • “How did they format?”
  • “Why was I hooked to their headlines?”
  • “Why was I engaged through their story?”
  • “How do they start and end their points/sentences?”
  • “Do they use the 1–3–1 technique to write sentences?”

Reading is an underrated skill. And it refines your writing.

Be personal

Be personal or go home.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from 17 months of writing on Medium it’s: BE PERSONAL.

In this age of AI, we’re already bombarded with so much information. And we don’t need more information. That’s why you’ll get missed if you can’t be personal in your articles.

But I won’t lie. I previously used AI. I used to post on several platforms. And to publish lots of articles easily. I used AI. But they were all garbage posts. That’s when I realized my mistake.

Then I focused on posting on Medium and stopped using AI.

And I’ve focused on writing more personal pieces about my transformations. And how I’ve improved in an aspect of my life.

By doing this my writing got way better than when I used AI.

My Advice: Post on one platform. Master it. Avoid other shiny platforms. Don’t use AI. Write more about your experiences and transformation.

Be personal to get ahead of 90% of garbage Medium writers who use AI.

Be consistent

Success belongs to the consistent.

Writing online is hard. And it’s crazy difficult to stay consistent for a long time.

If I could go back 17 months ago, and tell my previous self that I would reach 700+ followers and have several articles with hundreds of claps, he wouldn’t believe me.

Even now it’s hard to stay consistent. But back then when I only had 9 followers and only 11 views in a month, it was extremely difficult to stay consistent and motivated.

But I’m glad I stayed consistent.

You’ll reap the benefits of writing on Medium if you’re consistent.

Final Thoughts

No matter where you are in your Medium journey.

Keep going.

You’ll find success by reading, being you, and being consistent.
