Back in 2015, I hopped on a one-way flight to Singapore. I was 19. Everyone assumed I’d go to university — myself included. I was my school’s Head Boy (aka nerd). I passed all my exams.

But there was still so much I wanted to do. I wanted to swim off the coast of Cambodia, try egg tarts in Macau, and stare into the eyes of the Terracotta Army.

So I took a gap year. (Classic.)

I spent seven months pushing supermarket trollies and cleaning offices at 4 a.m. to save money. “What am I doing?” hummed softly in the background.

Then, while all my friends were “studying,” I set off with a few thousand dollars and a bunch of foreign currencies I couldn’t pronounce to stay with my host family. I found them through a random homestay website.

Staying with my Singaporean host family

The spring of 2015 was the time of my life.

I made lifelong friends, slept on an 18-hour sleeper train from Hanoi to Sapa Valley, and put a dead tarantula in my mouth. A Cambodian barman convinced me and my new friends this was tradition.
