Preparedness Is the Real Take-Away from David and Goliath

It’s not about size disparity at all.

Today’s Old Testament reading at my church was from 1 Samuel, the story of the young Israelite David pitting himself and his sling against the Philistine giant, Goliath.

I was the Old Testament reader today, so I read this story aloud to the congregation. Pretty much, the people who later complimented me at length on my reading were focused on the size disparity between David and Goliath as being their reason for liking the story. They liked the underdog aspect. I appreciated the compliments, but I felt they had missed the point.

I must never have read this story closely before, because today’s reading included material that I either didn’t know before or had forgotten reading. This particular story has a lot of relevance to modern life and to professional success in general.

The reading starts with Goliath giving his challenge to King Saul and the Israelite army.

“Send out a man to fight with me,” Goliath says. “If he kills me, my people shall be your servants, but if I kill him, your people shall serve mine.”
