The quality of my writing is directly correlated to this one simple thing
I’ve been writing full-time for the last five years. There have been a lot of ups and downs along the way but I’ve noticed a pattern that directly correlates to the quality of my writing and the engagement I get.
It’s not how often I write or how much I market myself. It’s more simple than that.
It’s how often I read.
When I’m reading regularly, new ideas flow on a constant conveyor belt. I learn new things, begin to think differently and sit down at my desk with a sense of urgency.
When I’m not reading regularly, ideas are much harder to come by, my words feel old and recycled, and I end up procrastinating a lot more.
Maybe that’s why Stephen King said: “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time – or the tools – to write.”
Being a full-time writer is like training for an ultra-marathon
It’s long, undulating, and challenging.
It’s unknown, uncertain, and walked alone.
However, it doesn’t matter how far we travel, we must stop, relax, and replenish…
