I recently asked some of my friends a simple question.

Do you look forward to Mondays or Fridays?

The answer was overwhelmingly — Friday.

That made me think, why do most people look forward to the weekends?

The weekend trap

The concept of the weekend was created in 19th-century Britain, to give blue-collar employees a much-needed rest after a long week.

Back then it made sense, people had to do physical labor for five days and they needed the other two to rest.

But now things are different.

Most of our jobs are meant for mental labor, the kind of labor that doesn't stop even on weekends. Hence, nowadays, weekends are not a period of rest, they’re just a momentary pause before you end up going back to square one.

We’ve been accustomed to believing that life can only be lived during the weekend. You’re supposed to slog your ass for five days and can live for yourself for the other two.

I don't condone this way of living life.

Life is not meant to be enjoyed only during the weekends. If you hate waking up on Monday you need to rethink what you’re doing.
