You might not be aware that there are people on the internet who discourage reading. They are boastful that they do not read.

Their primary argument is; instead of reading, one should observe life and procure practical knowledge. One should figure out everything by oneself.

Although, I don’t agree with this opinion, I am thankful that I heard this. Because, it invoked me to think about the need for reading. It made me realize the importance of reading.

“The man who doesn't read has no advantage over the man who can't read.” —Mark Twain

I would like to share my realizations about reading and why we should read.

1. We must seek help from people who lived before us.

Billions of people lived before us in this world. They have gone through all the challenges we are facing. Most importantly many people were far more knowledgeable, intelligent, and creative than us.

For example, if you want to become a Physicist and you refuse to learn about the works of other Physicists before you. It would be very late for you to discover everything they did. Imagine discovering E=mc^2 by yourself. It will not be possible for you to learn school-level Physics by yourself in your entire life. The same applies to other fields and other kinds of knowledge as well.

2. Pleasure

As human beings, we are curious by nature. We always tend to find answers to the questions we have in our minds. We have always been curious about our surroundings. Curiosity is in our DNA. If you find a topic of your interest, gaining knowledge can be a pleasure.

3. Growth

Beyond a doubt people who read and do not read have a distinction in their understanding, emotional intelligence, knowledge, rationality, perspectives, decision-making, and IQ. Reading can help you in those areas. It helps in personality development.

“You don’t know what you don’t know.” — Socrates

4. Not realizing

People often fail to realize their limitations because they don’t know what their limitations are. One can have a lack of knowledge and he or she can assume there is no knowledge except what they know. You can only know the limitations of your knowledge by gaining knowledge. People who don’t read, don’t realize what they are missing. The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know anything.

5. Life is a one-time experience

We will never be able to come back again. We don’t want to waste it. We must explore this world before we die. What can be a better idea than a book? A book takes you on a journey of this world. It tells us things that we will never be able to know.

We should be mindful of what we are reading. We should not believe everything we read. Yes, there are bad books. But that doesn't mean there are no good books and we can escape reading.

I am not against learning from personal experiences. I think it’s a great thing to do. But you should embrace knowledge from other sources as well.
